Driving in Aruba: what you need to know before you hit the road

Lizzy

So, you’ve decided to rent a car in Aruba—great choice! Driving here is pretty straightforward, but there are still a few things you should know before you hit the road. Here’s a quick guide to help you drive like a local (minus the speeding—we don’t recommend that!).

1. The Basics: What to Expect

Which side of the road? The right side, just like in the U.S. and Canada.

🚦 Traffic lights? No, there are no traffic lights on the island so you will see a lot of roundabouts.

📵 Phone rules? No texting or calling unless you’re using hands-free.

👶 Traveling with kids? Children under 5 years old must be in a car seat.

2. Speed Limits (Yes, they’re in kilometers!)

  • In town: 30 km/h (~19 mph)

  • On regular roads: 60 km/h (~37 mph)

  • On highways: 80 km/h (~50 mph)

⚠️ Speeding fines are no joke, so take it easy!

3. Parking: Where to Leave Your Ride

  • Hotels & resorts? Free parking is usually available.

  • Oranjestad (downtown)? Paid parking—look for the yellow “Aruba Pagatinu” machines.

  • Beaches? Most have free parking, but spots fill up quickly.

  • Avoid fines! Don’t park where there’s a yellow line.

4. Navigating Roundabouts (AKA, Don’t stop in the middle and don’t switch lanes!)

Aruba loves roundabouts. The rule is simple:

Cars inside the roundabout always have the right of way.

Don’t stop suddenly and don’t switch lanes while you’re on the roundabout! This happens daily and causes a lot of dangerous situations.

5. Road Conditions & Tips for Adventurers

  • City roads = Great condition.

  • Rural roads = A little bumpy, but fine for regular cars.

  • Arikok National Park = You’ll need a 4x4!

🐐 Fun fact: You might see wild donkeys, goats, or iguanas crossing the road. Just slow down and let them pass!

6. Best Apps for Navigation

📍 Google Maps & Waze work great.

📶 Offline maps are helpful in remote areas.
